i just want to say…

…that being in the flower business has given me a whole new level of dislike for Valentine’s Day. I know people do it all the time, but I am so not OK with going into work at 6:30am and not getting home until 8:30pm… Just to stand there at work and deal with a room full of men who hate the holiday, don’t want to spend the money, resent me for the fact that the prices are so high, and are pissed off because they waited until the last minute and now they can’t have exactly what they want.  I actually had one kid call me to find out the prices of our roses, laughed and hung up, then called back five minutes later and asked if I could give him a phone number for another florist in the area, because “you know, we’re kind of expensive.” When I told him no, he asked me if a manager would. I said she didn’t. Then he pitched an attitude and started in on me, and said that “I must have some other number for a florist in the area.” I told him I didn’t off the top of my head, no. Then he asked if the manager had any time to speak to him about it. I said, “I am the  manager and no, I don’t.” and hung up. Ass.

This week has drained me so much I can’t even explain it. This week is dreaded by everyone at the shop because it’s a ridiculous holiday and we get the brunt of it. Not to mention it ruins any chance of doing anything nice with my new husband – because by the time I got home from work, it was nearing 9pm and I was so exhausted I barely had it in me to change into my pajamas before passing out. Not to mention I gave up my Saturday off this week so another co-worker could have it off, and I got roped into doing a Bridal Fair that everyone thought was on Sunday, February 24th, but it turns out it’s this Sunday. So I’ll be working 9-5 tomorrow, too. I have absolutely no idea when my next day off, and – like I said – I know people do this all the time, but damnit I don’t have the energy for this.

Wake me up when it’s March.

  1. AMEN SISTER. Only… Not on the flowers thing, because I work in a bookstore/Cafe, and, well. It’s different. BUT DAMN THE MAN.

;) I hear you on the stress-levels thing, either way, and I recently realized that I never got back to you about that day we were supposed to hang — I totally considered that MY fault, so don’t feel badly! That’s my job, hehe. We’ll do it soon. You know — when it’s March. ;)

    <3

  2. I’m sorry! What a mess. I know V-Day sucks but I didn’t even think about how rough it must be for you. *hugs* I completely understand your lack of emails now. And don’t worry, things are going well for me. Josh is being a good husband again and I’m pretty happy, just trying to get everything done for the move. :) I’m ready for March, too, because everything has to be moved in by the 28th so maybe in March I can relax, too!!

  3. Awww, that sucks. I’m sorry you’re having a rough time at work. I hope that, other than that, things are going well for you though. :)

  4. I hear ya. I can’t even IMAGINE working the floral biz at at time like this. when I was a receptionist at a car dealership (and, mind you, VERY busy all day) people would call and wanted me to look up numbers for other dealerships, wtf? it’s called a phonebook! and I really, really hate it when people complain about prices… yeah, like I price everything myself at whatever I feel like it. maybe if you tell me one more time we’re too expensive, I’ll change the prices just for YOU!

haha sorry, I have just worked in retail wayyyy too long!!

  5. i <3 you, jessa! i just worked 60 hours in the past 6 days, so i feel you.

  6. You’ll be happy to know my husband bought my flowers from Costco, so there was no poor florist slaving away at my expense. Hope you get a day off soon!

  7. :-( Welcome to the world of retail! I have worked in retail and hospitality industries for many moons and that type of attitude is the norm. Holidays are especially tough on the old psyche. Long busy hours frustrated customers. One of my favorite lines from customers/guests during Christmas is: they should just be glad they’re getting what they got, they don’t deserve it anyway  ! ROFLMAO! You either learn to look for the humor in the situation or face a complete mental breakdown!
